Experience the robust flavor and exceptional performance of West Coast Seeds Scarlet Nantes Carrots. Hand-harvested in the Northwest, this heirloom variety has been selected for North American conditions for over 50 years. Known for its strong tops and excellent flavor, Scarlet Nantes produces 18cm (7") roots that mature early, making them perfect for baby carrots or full-sized harvests. These carrots are top-yielding for juicing and freeze particularly well for winter use.

Key Features:

  • Adapted for Northwest Growing: Proven performance in North American climates.
  • Heirloom Flavor: Enjoy the rich, tender taste of these classic carrots.
  • Versatile Harvest: Harvest early for baby carrots or let them mature for full-sized roots.
  • Excellent Storage: Ideal for freezing and storing, providing fresh carrots throughout winter.
  • High Yield: Top choice for juicing due to its tender flesh.

Growing Instructions:

  • Season & Zone: Best grown in cool seasons with full sun exposure.
  • Timing: Direct sow from just after the last frost date to late summer for continuous harvests. In mild climates, sow winter-harvest carrots in the first two weeks of August.
  • Starting: Sow seeds shallowly, 5mm (¼”) deep, 4 seeds per 2cm (1″), and firm the soil lightly after seeding. Water gently and keep soil moist until seeds sprout in 14-21 days.

Growing Tips:

  • Soil Requirements: Prefers soft, humus-rich soil with a pH of 6.0-6.8. Avoid using fresh manure to prevent misshapen roots.
  • Thinning: Thin seedlings to 4-10cm (1½-4″) apart when they reach 2cm (1″) tall to avoid competition.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist and free of weeds. Hill soil around carrots as they grow to prevent green shoulders.

Harvesting:

  • Optimal Harvest: Carrots can be harvested at any size, but their flavor is best when fully mature and brightly colored. Store harvested carrots at cold temperatures just above 0ºC.

Pests & Diseases:

  • Carrot Rust Fly: Use floating row covers to protect against rust fly infestations. Planting after June helps avoid major infestations.
  • Wireworm: Ensure well-drained soil and interplant with mustard to deter wireworms. Predatory nematodes are effective for controlling both carrot rust fly and wireworms.

Companion Planting:

  • Beneficial Companions: Plant with beans, Brassicas, chives, leeks, lettuce, onions, peas, peppers, radish, rosemary, sage, and tomatoes. Avoid planting near dill, parsnips, and potatoes. Carrots near tomatoes may have stunted roots but will have exceptional flavor.

West Coast Seeds Scarlet Nantes Carrots offer an unparalleled combination of flavor, versatility, and ease of growing. Add these heirloom seeds to your garden for a bountiful harvest that excels in both fresh and stored uses. Order now to enjoy the best carrots your garden can produce.
