Grow the finest cilantro with West Coast Seeds Cilantro Santo Long Standing. This variety, scientifically known as Coriandrum sativum, is bred to be slow bolting, ensuring a longer harvest period. Direct sow short rows every other week from spring to late summer for continuous fresh cilantro. Mature seeds, known as coriander, are easy to harvest and essential in many dishes, including curry powders.

Key Features:

  • Slow Bolting: Bred to delay flowering, allowing for extended leaf harvest.
  • Dual Purpose: Leaves are fresh cilantro; seeds are coriander.
  • Easy to Grow: Ideal for beginner gardeners.
  • Overwintering: Can grow through winter with protection in Zones 7+.
  • Beneficial for Gardens: Attracts beneficial insects like Syrphid flies, lacewings, and lady beetles.

Growing Instructions:

  • Season & Zone: Best grown in cool seasons with sun or partial shade. Overwinters with protection in Zones 7+.
  • Timing: Direct sow from just after the last frost date to late spring. For a winter crop, direct sow in the fall under cover. Optimal soil temperature for germination is 15°C (60°F), with seeds sprouting in 5-10 days.
  • Starting: Sow seeds 2cm (1") deep in short rows. Thin seedlings to 5-10cm (2-4") apart for leaf harvest, and 23cm (9") apart if growing for seeds.

Growing Tips:

  • Soil Requirements: Prefers light, well-drained soil. Grows best in partial shade and relatively dry conditions.
  • Maintenance: Avoid transplanting and overwatering to prevent bolting. Use a cloche in winter for protection and continued growth.
  • Harvesting: Pick young leaves at about 10cm (4") in height. To harvest seeds, hang seed heads in a paper bag to catch the seeds as they ripen and fall out.

Harvesting:

  • Leaves: Use fresh for the best flavor; can also freeze in ice cube trays with water.
  • Seeds: Harvest by placing seed heads in a paper bag and hanging them up in a dry, airy location away from direct sunlight.

Companion Planting:

  • Beneficial Companions: Cilantro repels aphids, potato beetles, and spider mites while attracting beneficial predatory insects like hoverflies.
