Discover the exceptional qualities of West Coast Seeds - Diamond Eggplant Certified Organic. This high-yielding, open-pollinated variety is perfectly adapted for cold climates and short growing seasons, making it ideal for northern regions. Diamond eggplants mature early, producing clusters of appealing, slender 10-15 cm (4-6 inch) dark purple fruits. Enjoy their firm texture and mild, non-bitter flavor, perfect for roasting or grilling with a splash of olive oil and a dash of salt and pepper.

Key Features:

  • Certified Organic: Grown with the highest organic standards.
  • High-Yielding & Open Pollinated: Reliable production and genetic diversity.
  • Cold-Climate Adaptation: Thrives in cooler climates and short seasons.
  • Delicious Flavor: Firm texture with mild, non-bitter taste.
  • Ideal for Roasting & Grilling: Perfect for a variety of culinary uses.

Growing Information:

  • Season & Zone: Best grown in warm seasons with full sun exposure.
  • Timing: Sow indoors four weeks before the last frost date. Optimal soil temperature for germination is 24-32°C (75-90°F). Seeds sprout in 7-12 days.

Planting Instructions:

  • Starting: Sow seeds 5mm-1cm (¼-½”) deep in individual peat or coir pots. Transplant after nighttime temperatures are steadily above 10°C (50°F). Space plants 45-60cm (18-24") apart. Medium-sized (3-5 gallon) containers are also suitable.
  • Growing: Ideal soil pH is 5.5-6.0. Ensure soil is rich in phosphorus and calcium by adding lime and compost three weeks prior to transplanting. Mix ¼-½ cup of complete organic fertilizer into the soil beneath each transplant. Use a clear plastic cloche or floating row cover to enhance growth by increasing heat. Maintain consistent moisture and warmth for best results.

Harvesting Tips:

  • Pinching Blossoms: Pinch off blossoms 2 to 4 weeks before the first expected frost to focus the plant's energy on ripening existing fruit.
  • Harvesting: Harvest fruits when they reach half their full size to prevent seediness and encourage more production. Use scissors or secateurs to cut the fruit, avoiding sharp spurs at the stem end.

Companion Planting:

  • Good Companions: Amaranth, beans, marigolds, peas, peppers, spinach, and thyme.
  • Avoid: Planting near fennel.

Pests & Diseases:

  • Pests: Control aphids with water sprays, use row covers for flea beetles, handpick Colorado potato beetles, and use cardboard collars for cutworms.
  • Diseases: Remove and destroy plants affected by verticillium wilt and tobacco mosaic virus. Prevent these diseases by practicing good hygiene and controlling aphids.

Add West Coast Seeds - Diamond Eggplant Certified Organic to your garden for a high-yield, cold-climate adapted variety that produces delicious, slender fruits perfect for a variety of dishes. Enjoy the robust growth and flavorful harvests all season long.
