Perfect for summer harvests, Chinook leeks are also ideal for starting indoors in Prairie and Midwestern climates for transplanting once the soil warms up. For longer blanched shanks, simply hill up extra soil around the stems as they grow.

Growing Information:

Season & Zone: Cool season, full sun exposure, winter harvest leeks hardy to Zone 7.
Timing: Start summer/fall harvest leeks 6-8 weeks before the last frost date indoors. For winter harvest leeks, start indoors from March to mid-June or in a humus-rich nursery bed outside in mild winter areas. Optimal soil temperature for germination is 10-25°C (50-75°F). Seeds sprout in 10-16 days.

Planting Instructions:

Starting: Sow seeds 5mm (¼”) deep in flats, spacing seeds about 1cm (½”) apart. Transplant when seedlings are 20cm (8") tall, spacing 20cm (8") apart in rows 45cm (18") apart. In raised beds, rows can be as narrow as 20cm (8").
Growing: Ideal soil pH is 5.5-6.5. Use fertile soil with lots of compost and ½ cup balanced organic fertilizer per 2m (6') of row. Transplant seedlings to the same depth as their soil plug. To blanch the stems, hill soil up around the stem as the leek grows or mulch with straw.
Mulching: In late fall, mulch around leeks as high up the stems as possible. Cover with a blanket or tarp if temperatures drop below -10°C (14°F).

Harvesting Tips:

Harvesting: Dig up leeks at any size as needed. If winter harvest leeks freeze, wait for a thaw during a warm spell to harvest.

Companion Planting:

Good Companions: Beets, carrots, celery, onions, and spinach.
Avoid Planting Near: Beans and peas. Leeks help repel carrot rust flies.
