Cultivate the aromatic and versatile West Coast Seeds - Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) in your garden or containers. This tropical plant thrives in temperate regions with the right care. Sow lemongrass seeds indoors in late winter using bottom heat or a seedling heat mat. Maintain moist conditions at 21°C (70°F) for optimal germination in 5 to 21 days. Transplant outdoors or into containers in full sun once the weather warms up. At the end of summer, move container plants into a frost-free environment with good air circulation, reducing watering to keep the soil barely moist.

Key Features:

  • Aromatic & Productive: Adds flavor to culinary dishes and teas.
  • Great for Containers: Excels in greenhouses and as a container plant.
  • Tender Perennial: Can be treated as a tender perennial in temperate climates.
  • Open Pollinated: Ensures genetic diversity and sustainability.
  • Excels in Hot Season: Thrives in full sun and warm temperatures.

Growing Information:

  • Season & Zone: Hot season, full sun exposure.
  • Timing: Sow seeds indoors in late winter. Transplant outdoors only when nighttime temperatures are steadily above 10°C (50°F).

Planting Instructions:

  • Starting: Press seeds gently 5mm (¼") into pre-moistened, sterilized seed starting mix. Use seedling trays with plastic domes or containers sealed inside large plastic bags. Maintain a soil temperature of 21°C (70°F) with bottom heat. Keep seed trays or containers in a dark room or cupboard. Seeds germinate in 5 to 21 days. Maintain a moist, not wet, environment. Once seedlings appear, remove the dome or plastic bag and move them into full sun or under strong, full-spectrum artificial light.

Growing Tips:

  • Harden Off: Gradually expose seedlings to full sun and cooler temperatures in early summer. Transplant into 5-gallon (or larger) containers with high nitrogen organic fertilizer like Alfalfa Meal or Blood Meal mixed into the soil.
  • Watering: Keep soil relatively moist throughout the growing period, watering 2-3 times a week, more in hot weather.
  • End of Season Care: Cut back plants to 15-20cm (6-8") tall once nighttime temperatures approach 10°C (50°F). Reduce watering and discontinue feeding. Move plants to a bright, airy, frost-free spot. Water sparingly to keep soil barely moist to nearly dry.

Harvesting Tips:

  • Stalks: Use secateurs to snip whole stalks from the base when they are at least 15mm (½") thick.
  • Storage: Lemongrass dries well for tea, and whole stalk segments can be bundled and frozen for use in soups and curry pastes.

Enhance your garden and culinary creations with the aromatic and productive West Coast Seeds - Lemongrass. Enjoy its fresh flavor and versatility, perfect for adding a zesty twist to your favorite dishes and beverages.
