Grow the exceptional West Coast Seeds - Vates Blue Curled Scotch Kale, a slow-bolting, low-growing dwarf variety ideal for summer and winter harvests. With finely curled blue-green leaves, this kale is perfect for large containers, reaching only 30-40cm (12-16") in height and about 60cm (24") in diameter. Enjoy its especially tender and sweet leaves after a light frost, making it a delicious and nutritious addition to your garden.

Key Features:

  • Dwarf Variety: Low-growing and compact, perfect for patio containers.
  • Finely Curled Leaves: Blue-green leaves with a delicate texture.
  • Frost-Tender: Becomes especially sweet and tender after a light frost.
  • Open-Pollinated Seeds: Ensuring genetic diversity and adaptability.
  • Matures in 50-80 Days: Ready for harvest in just 50 days, slower in winter.

Growing Information:

  • Season & Zone: Cool season, full sun exposure, winter hardy to Zone 6.
  • Timing: Direct sow from early spring to mid-summer for summer to winter harvests. Alternatively, start indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost and transplant out once the soil warms up. Optimal soil temperature for germination is 10-30°C (50-85°F). Seeds germinate in 7-10 days.

Planting Instructions:

  • Starting: Sow 3-4 seeds 5mm (¼”) deep in each spot. Thin to the strongest plant. Space plants 45-60cm (18-24") apart in rows 75-90cm (30-36") apart.
  • Growing: Ideal soil pH is 6.0-6.8. Add lime to the bed 3 weeks before sowing. Ensure well-drained, fertile soil high in organic matter with consistent moisture. Mix ¼ cup of complete organic fertilizer into the soil beneath each transplant or 1 cup beneath every 3m (10') of seed furrow.

Harvesting Tips:

  • Continuous Harvest: Grow as a cut-and-come-again crop for salad mixes by direct-seeding and cutting baby leaves. Harvest leaves from the bottom up as needed to keep plants producing all season.
  • Frost Sweetening: Leaves get sweeter after frost, with overwintering possible in many areas. In spring, enjoy the delicious flowering stems and buds from surviving plants.

Diseases & Pests:

  • Pest Protection: Use floating row covers to protect against cabbage moths and other insects.
  • Disease Prevention: Follow a strict 4-year crop rotation to avoid planting Brassicas in the same spot more than once every four years.

Companion Planting:

  • Beneficial Companions: Chamomile, dill, mint, rosemary, and sage enhance growth and flavor.
  • Avoid Planting Near: Eggplants, peppers, potatoes, or tomatoes due to soil acidity issues.

Add West Coast Seeds - Vates Blue Curled Scotch Kale to your garden for a robust, nutritious addition, ensuring a steady supply of delicious and healthy greens throughout the growing season. Enjoy the ease of growing this compact, frost-tender superfood.
