Allium cepa. Discover the crisp and flavorful Kincho Onions from West Coast Seeds. These Japanese type scallions feature dark-green leaves and tall, straight, single-stalk stems that do not bulb. Perfect for summer and fall production, Kincho scallions maintain a uniform thickness along their entire length and look fantastic when bunched on the market table. With a bright flavor and crisp texture, these scallions are ideal for slicing. Kincho onions are also a great choice for winter gardening; just provide a cloche cover over the row to enjoy fresh scallions all winter.

Key Features:

  • Japanese Type Scallions: Dark-green leaves with tall, straight, single-stalk stems.
  • No Bulbing: Maintains a uniform thickness without bulbing.
  • Crisp & Flavorful: Bright flavor with a crisp texture, perfect for slicing.
  • Year-Round Growth: Suitable for summer, fall, and winter gardening with cloche cover.
  • Open-Pollinated: Reliable and consistent growth.

Growing Information:

  • Matures in: 50 days (Open-pollinated seeds)
  • Seed Count: 0.50g

Timing: Start shallots and storage onions indoors in late winter and early spring, and transplant 2-4 weeks after the last frost date. Overwintering onions need to be started in early summer and transplanted by mid-August. Scallions can be direct sown every 3 weeks from two weeks after the last frost date to late summer. Optimal soil temperature for germination is 21-25°C (70-75°F). Seeds will emerge in 6-12 days, depending on conditions.

Starting Instructions:

  • Depth: Sow seeds 5mm-1cm (¼-½”) deep.
  • Spacing: Space plants 15cm (6") apart in rows 45-75cm (18-30") apart.

Growing Tips: Kincho scallions thrive in fertile, well-drained soil with full sun exposure. Add well-rotted compost and dig ½-1 cup balanced organic fertilizer into the soil beneath each 3m (10′) of row. Keep moisture high in the top 20-30cm (8-12") of soil.

Harvesting: Harvest scallions when they reach the desired size, typically when the stalks are firm and straight. Use them fresh in salads, as garnishes, or in your favorite dishes for a burst of flavor.

Companion Planting: The pungent odor of onions repels many pests and protects nearby garden vegetables. Plant chamomile and summer savory near onions to improve their flavor. Onions also work well alongside beets, Brassicas, carrots, dill, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce, strawberries, and tomatoes. Avoid planting near asparagus or peas.
